Getting Over the Fear of Writing Your Novel

Today’s post is simple:

Get Over Your Fear of Writing Your Novel

Don’t read this post just open the WIP and write something.

“JUST WRITE”

This is why today i am not writing a blog post. I got distracted and thought, “what else could I be doing other than this difficult scene?” I came up with blog post! –> I then slapped myself in the head. –> I am not writing a post. –> I am writing!

“JUST WRITE”

Just Write That Book!

You can learn unless you write
You can’t get better unless you write
You can’t edit what you haven’t written
You can’t be proud of what you haven’t written
You can’t share your work with others unless you write it
You can’t sell what you haven’t written
You are not a Writer if you don’t actually write!

So just get on with it – No more excuses and just do it. Let the words pour in what ever manner you chose. You can delete it later, no one ever needs to see the mash of bad spelling and grammar that poured out of your fingers. You can edit that. You can perfect that. You can’t unless you write it.

“JUST WRITE”

Lovely post, Sarah, and so very true! I’ve been trying to master these rules for the past few months. The one that always trips me up is “You can’t edit if you don’t write.” So often I get trapped by the fear that my work won’t be good enough, but realizing that it’s okay (and normal) to generate a less-than-stellar first few drafts has really freed me up.

P.S. I’m in your #writecampaign fantasy group, though I signed up as Jamila Jamison. I just switched over to my new pen name, so hopefully that won’t be too confusion. :D

Lol, I know all about the blog switch. Good luck with it. Let me know if you need a hand at all. I did that switch to WP self hosted only 3 weeks ago.

      Happy writing

      Sarah

Hoorah. A timely post. That’s just what I’m doing today. Just letting to the words flow out of me. Got to get back.

This is a very good point that I’ve heard several times before.

I loved it and I copied and printed it out to tape up by my desk. It is totally true. Thanks for stating it again in a way that hit me between the eyes :)

      Many thanks :-)

I hope it helps a few people get a few more words out there and loose the fear of feeling their work is crap.

It’s not crap. Practice, keep writing and it can only get better.

(This is what i tell myself everyday i have a bad writing day)

      Just get it done.

Thanks for stopping by my blog,

      Sarah Ketley

    1. admin says:

I struggle with the EVERYDAY but yes you are absolutely correct. “Just Write”

  9. Allie says:

This is a great post. And absolutely true. I have spent today not in writing mode at all, but in creative mode, thinking up my next story. Does that count? (probably not!)

Hmmm, the blog post which isn’t really a blog post huh?

    :-)

I agree…that is, if you’re really saying we should beware the lure of social media and remember to actually WRITE. I’ve been struggling with this very thing lately…

  12. Roni Loren says:

Agreed, lol. I ofted have to stop myself from flitting off to twitter or to blog just because I’ve hit a tough spot in the book and want to go hide. :)

    1. Roni Loren says:

That should’ve been “often” not ofted. :) Haven’t had enough caffeine yet today.

      1. admin says:

Do you know, i didn’t even notice… FAR too late here in Aussie for my editing goggles to be functioning at full capacity.

I hide in my blog and social media. During NaNo, i shall have to take a social media break. Limit my time on twitter and blogs.

Thanks for stopping by *squee* much appreciated.

        Sarah
