What Do I Review
I normally review most books that I read for my own pleasure. This normally means that I review:
- YA – Historical, Contemporary, Steampunk, Paranormal, Fantasy
- Adult – Historical, Paranormal, Steampunk
I do occasionally read and review other books, but not often.
Keeping Integrity in Reviews
To keep integrity in my book reviews, I do not publish reviews that I believe are false. I will NOT give you a five star review if you are my best friend, or have some other hold over me. I write the review as I found the book.
For this reason, I do not review books publicly that I did not like. That means I only post reviews that are three stars or higher.
Also, Just because I liked/loved your book does NOT mean it gets a five star review. There is far too much of that going on at the moment. I really really weigh the book in front of me and keep to the following “star” Guidelines.
What my Book Review “Stars” mean to me
I look at the following points:
- Characterization and dialogue
- Writing quality
- Wow factor
Positive Book Reviews
Your book in every way blew me out of the water. It was exciting, it made me get involved, the plot, the pacing, the characters and the writing was fantastic. I never came out of the story and went “what the…” or had a moment where I didn’t truly believe in your work. I believe you are a gifted author with an amazing potential.
These are the books that I dream about writing, the ones that I told my non-writing friends about. Unless is is LOTR length I probably read it in one night. –>You really have to work to be here. –> I would buy your next book without thinking.
I loved your book in every way. It was great. I’ll read it again, i’ll recommend it to others. I really found myself involved in your book. There may have been a small problem that i just couldn’t quite put my finger on somewhere, but it was not enough to distract me from the book. –> I love your work. –> I would definitely consider buying your next book.
Not as bad as you might think. Three star is still a “Positive Review” in my mind. I enjoyed the book. You could have either improved in some areas or just the wow factor was missing. All in all, I enjoyed your book. –> I might consider another book by you depending on what the premise was.
Negative Book Reviews
The book wasn’t for me. I didn’t like it. There were major holes in one of the areas. I may have finished the book, i may not have. I believe it could have potential if it was better written.
Yuck! –> That is all I have to say. –> Yuck
I really consider a book before giving it a review score. Please note these reviews are based on my enjoyment and what I believe “makes a good book”. My experience in reviewing only comes from years and years of reading. If you can’t draw in a reader with years of reading experience, please don’t poke “the nasties” at my reviews. Improve your writing first.
I generally err on the side of ‘giving you the benefit of the doubt’.
However most of the time, I only get books three stars and above because I choose carefully before I read.
