~ DAY ZERO ~
Day Zero (working title) is about a young Aussie high school student who finds out she has cancer.
It is about her coming to terms with her mortality and what she wants to leave behind her when she dies. If dying in peace means making up with her mother, Sam is convinced she will just have to live forever. What does she do about God?
Because right now Sam is totally convinced he is nothing but a big fraud threatening to make her unhappy.
The majority of the action takes place in the hospital when Sam is stuck in isolation. A difficult task, but it is getting there.
The following is a brief excerpt of one of the scenes. Just so people can see what i am doing.
A silent tear trickled subconsciously down my cheek. Then another until I had to brush them away with trembling hands. Paula gulped through her tears and collected me into a giant, protective embrace. I didn’t resist and stayed buried in her arms like they were the only things sheltering me from reality. I was 17 and I had just been handed a death sentence. Happy Birthday Sam. You have Leukemia.”
